Adrenal Fatigue

Adrenal fatigue is a common occurrence in virtually all forms of chronic illness. As such, any thorough protocol aimed at restoring health will eventually need to provide some form of adrenal support. Located on the top of each kidney, the adrenal glands are responsible for production of multiple cellular mediators including stress hormones, sex hormones and neurotransmitters. Any reduction in function of these glands can result in fatigue, poor sleep, blood sugar dysregulation, poor immune function, low libido, decreased stamina and weight gain.

One approach to testing involves performing a salivary test that checks cortisol and DHEA, two prominent adrenal stress hormones, four times during the day. Sex hormones and the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine may also be assessed depending on associated symptoms. Comprehensive testing can help differentiate adrenal fatigue from other endocrine concerns such as hypothyroidism.

Assuming the source of depletion has been addressed, restorative treatment is extremely effective at regaining strength, stamina, healthy sleep-wake cycles and libido. A combination of dietary recommendations, nutritional support, herbal therapy and, if needed, specific prescription medications can allow the adrenals to re-establish normal cortisol and DHEA levels. Natural medications such as vitamin C, Zinc, tyrosine, copper, B-5, B-12, rhodiola, ginseng, maca, Cordyceps, Pregnenolone, DHEA and certain homeopathics are all examples of targeted therapies that the physicians at BCNC may recommend. Additional treatment suggestions may be made to support sexual function if necessary. The creation of a custom treatment plan based on each patient’s individual needs typically results in a rapid and robust response to therapy.
